The brave new world that’s PR July 31, 2009

There’s possibly never been a more exciting time to be in PR. Why? The whole game is changing thanks to social media. Here’s just 2 very different examples for starters. First, the Dave Carroll and United Airlines story. Unhappy with the lack of customer service, he wrote a song, posted it on Youtube, it got over 3 m hits and UA’s share price dropped dramatically.  A challenge for the PR team as well as customer services.  And then there’s the radio stations – no longer just audio – their websites contain blogs, podcasts, vodcasts and photography. A Microsoft Christmas launch this week got its photography and videos posted on the Radio 1 website.   In the past, this would have been a two minute interview on air once then gone forever. Social media gives much greater longevity to news and articles. I reckon we will look back at these last few years as a revolutionary time for PR world.
